The path to happiness: the power of why.

Click to view image detailsOne of the most powerful questions when it comes to becoming a happier person is WhyWhy am I unhappy?   Just questioning unhappiness is the first step to being free of it.  But the way we question has everything to do with the answers we may get.  Why is so often an accusatory question.  Why am I unhappy? can often mean: What is wrong with me?  To help yourself to be a happier person, harness the power of Why by infusing the question with love and acceptance.  Know that you are not wrong to be unhappy.  Ask why with the innocence of a child.  You will be amazed what you will discover!  Wendy Dolber, author, The Guru Next Door, A Teacher’s Legacy.

The Art of Not Trying

As I start work on my new book, a guide to the Option Method, I am already reminded of the power of Not Trying.  Nothing felt right until I let go and went with what felt right to me.  You know how they always say, Do Your Research, Know How You Will Market Your Book, Know Your Audience, etc., etc. ? All good advice.  So I did as much of that as I wanted and then set out to write with my head and heart stuffed full of other people’s approaches.  Nothing much happened.  The excitement, mystery and inspiration that sat on my shoulder as I wrote my first book, The Guru Next Door, vanished.  Writing Guru was truly a lesson in not trying.  I showed up and let it happen.  True, it was in my head all day long for the 4 years it took to write.  But when I showed up at the keyboard, it flowed from my brain, down my arms, to my hands on to the screen – often requiring very little editing.  I know every book can’t be like that, but ….  But nothing.  Why not?

So I stopped trying and locked into what I know to be true.  If there is a secret to perfect doing, this is it.  And no wonder that the same applies to being happy.  Bruce Di Marsico, my teacher and creator of The Option Method, wrote this:  Being unhappy is trying to be happy.  There is nothing you have to do to get happier.  Want it and let it happen.”

This is the way I love to live my life.  I have faith in what that will create in the world.  So let’s not try together!
